milestones

Poem #210 for Jessica Franklin

Milestones are important in anyone’s life
they are what keeps us driven as a species
the desire for more
the fight for something
the strive for better

We arrive constantly at the fork in the road
led to believe
that only one opportunity
in only one particular moment of our lives
will define us for the entirety of them

These evenly-tread-upon lifelines
move forward equally
regardless of the linear time of existence
and makes no exceptions with its insistence

This is why we should always look forward
why we should learn from, but not bask in
our looming failures and poor decisions

The struggle and the goals need not coexist

Acknowledge, set-aside, look ahead
then smile at the fact that life continues…
goals are just the sugar
to make the bitter medicine of reality go down easier
