parakeets

Poem #80 for Tracey Rosten

The invasion began years ago.

I looked up at work one day

witnessed the green streaks

wings slicing through a blue sky.

I heard the screams, felt the wind

from the chaos of their urgency.

They devoured one tree

defecating intentionally

recoloring the leaves in shades

too inappropriate for a poem;

Then on to the next

and the next.

The Asian tourists snapped pictures

through their laughter and admiration

Children squealed with naïve excitement

Troglodytes justified their cosmic coolness

and I sat there, fascinated

at this army of green parakeets

angry about their displacement

and underestimating the logic of us humans.
