time for artists to get real

Poem #211 for Tommy Carney

Why does bitterness need to destroy everything?
The competition
The rivalry
The back-talking side-glancing toxicity
for the sake of not losing
by whatever standard is decided to measure upon…

It is difficult enough
loving a building
loving an idea so much
despising the institution that has nested within its walls,
an artificial heart
for the organic creativity that was originally intended
that there is no room for now,
but to loathe and love and give
uncontrollably
habitually
and to believe in hope
as a means of justifying choices
is the precious atrocity
laid before only artists
to deconstruct

art is not commerce
relax
everyone is allowed to create within these walls
and there ain’t no need to be afraid
of honesty
