a child’s wonder

Poem #352 for Karen Cigna

“Teacher, Teacher…look what I can do!!!”
Then, with the seriousness of solving world hunger,
he raises both eyebrows, together, then lowers them,
again, and again, and again…

Such pride in accomplishing the impossible.

“It’s magic…from air…from the sky!!!”
She runs out the front door into the afternoon shower
rainbows exploding in her mind as an
uncontrollable giggle takes her over
stomping her feet in puddles of a musicless dance…

Such fascination in witnessing a first rainfall.

“And there’s a BOOM then PURKKSH then KRSHRRACKLE!!!”
Having seen the pictures and now being old
enough to read, to understand words yet
still painfully overexcited to try to find his own
for sounds there are none for…

Such exuberance in learning about volcanoes and nature.

They have no logic, only impulse.
They have no baggage, only naivety.
They have no grudge, only emotion.
There is no future, only present.

As adults, we suffer in the same traps
our parents and parents before them have wilted away in…
forgetting that the world of a child bears no resemblance
to that of our own.

Children do not need our overbearing protection;
they do not resist the laws of nature, and thus,
are water, always evolving perfectly…
until our interference.

We, as adults, feel we have created answers to every problem
and dedicate our lives to educating the child
when really all we have done is
created those problems so as to feel we have
gained answers through our years and experiences.

A child’s wonder is the key to all of life.

It is time we adults should dedicate our lives to being
educated by our children…
